Is it right to break up?

Sometimes it is right to break up.  Breaking up sucks.  It often hurts both parties involved, but sometimes it needs to be done. There are three questions to ask yourself when contemplating breaking up with your significant other.

1.  In light of your past experiences, would breaking up be a wise decision? If something has happened in the past, say your significant other cheated on you, it may be right to break up.  If you see a tendency in your past to cling to people of ill repute, and you start to notice those trends again, it may be right to break up.

2.  In light of your current circumstances, would breaking up be a wise decision? Think about how things are currently going in your relationship.  Are you feeling loved and appreciated?  Are you being abused verbally, physically, or otherwise?  If your relationship is currently unhealthy, it might be right to break up.

3.  In light of your future hopes and dreams, would breaking up be a wise decision? If you can’t picture your future with your significant other as a positive experience, it may be right to break up.  Are your future hopes and dreams similar to your significant other’s hopes and dreams?  If you are headed in two completely different directions in life, it may be time.

It never hurts to get a second opinion on whether or not you should break up with your significant other.  Outsiders often have a better perspective than insiders in relationships.  While it sucks to break up, sometimes it is the healthiest thing to do, and life does go on!
